Traditionally, surgical training and pre-operative planning have been lacking in effectiveness and have consistently been prone to a bevy of risks. The advent of virtual reality (VR), however, heralds a new era of greater possibilities in surgical care. Founded by VR haptics innovator Dr. Prashant Banerjee, Ph.D and Chairman, ImmersiveTouch has been spearheading VR innovation in surgical planning and training since 2005. The company has developed a patented haptic surgical simulator technology that leverages patient-specific CT and MRI scans to create a realistic and risk-free VR environment from which surgeons and medical students can plan and practice surgery more efficiently. Bringing immersive VR experiences to surgical planning and patient-specific surgical simulation and rehearsal, ImmersiveTouch improves care delivery.

The robotic motor and sensors within the surgical simulator recreate the feeling of human touch to build 3D VR patient models within seconds. “With our technology and focused approach toward quality care, we don’t just improve surgical training, but also help surgeons plan every case with an entirely new level of precision and confidence. We fully commit ourselves to drive surgical innovation both on the learning and on the clinical side,” says Jay Banerjee, COO, ImmersiveTouch.

ImmersiveTouch caters to different organizations that include medical device companies, hospitals, simulation centers, and educational institutions located in the United States and around the world. For medical device companies that wish to streamline the training experience of its physician customers and sales representatives, ImmersiveTouch builds custom VR medical tools and medical devices based on their CAD drawings.
The company also offers tools for procedural and anatomical training to the medical staff. “We have a specialized team that helps the medical device companies create a specific training simulation system for their surgical training needs, be it related to knees, eyes, or brain,” says Banerjee. The company has a rich talent pool of software developers, engineers, and biomedical designers who work with device companies to develop tool-specific simulators and trainers for different surgeries.

With our technology and focused approach toward quality care, we don’t just improve surgical training, but also help surgeons plan every case with an entirely new level of precision and confidence

On the other hand, the simulation centers benefit from ImmersiveTouch’s versatile and custom medical training modules that fit into any custom training program. The ability to practice surgery in a secure, and interactive environment results in marked improvement in skills development, knowledge retention, and proficiency. The simulation centers can develop custom training modules and virtual patient case library to train students on real-life surgical complications. The hands-on experience in a simulated environment gives trainees the confidence to handle complex and risky medical cases deftly. As the practice data is stored smartly, administrators and trainers can easily track the performance of every individual. To date, ImmersiveTouch is installed in over 30 universities including Johns Hopkins and the Cleveland Clinic.

Paving its way into the future, ImmersiveTouch is extending its surgical simulation prowess by continuing to develop strategic partnerships with medical device companies big and small to dramatically improve training experience.
